There are a range of reasons, from age to accident, why our teeth fall out and need to be replaced. Tooth replacement is fairly common, especially in older folks. Read on to learn about our restorative dentistry treatments here at Leesburg Family Dental, including dental implants, bridges, and dentures!
Tooth Replacement Options
Implants
Dental implants are becoming the most popular option for tooth replacement, especially if just one tooth needs replacing. With an implant, a biocompatible titanium post is screwed into the jaw bone in place of the missing tooth root. The custom-made replacement tooth is then attached, providing a durable and incredibly realistic substitute for the old tooth. Implants are preferred by many patients because the transition from a natural tooth to an artificial one is seamless and will not alter your speech or appearance, or give you trouble eating. Oral hygiene is also unaffected. Keep in mind that the health and stability of your jaw is an important consideration in the procedure, so our expert team will assess whether you are a candidate before proceeding with this method.
Bridge
Bridges are commonly chosen when multiple teeth must be replaced. A bridge is made up of the artificial teeth attached to a metal frame. It’s secured to the mouth by attaching either to implants or to healthy teeth covered by crowns. Although a bridge is an affordable and fairly quick way to replace multiple teeth at once, it can’t be counted on to last permanently, unlike implants. The bridge will eventually need to be replaced as their reliance on other teeth causes stress in the mouth. If you do go with this tooth replacement option, we recommend also investing in a water flosser to help clean the area surrounding your bridge.
Dentures
Full dentures are an effective solution when all the teeth have been lost. Similarly, partial dentures can replace a section with multiple missing teeth. Dentures are made of an artificial base, usually acrylic resin, connected to a set of false teeth, and can be held in the mouth either by implants or temporary seals and adhesives. This tooth replacement option is affordable and comfortable, but does require some getting used to, special maintenance, and regular adjustment.
