How many dental appointments do I need to make per year?

The American Dental Association recommends that each person gets a professional dental cleaning and an examination at least twice a year.

However, there are cases in which our team may recommend three or four dental cleanings and exams per year, especially if a patient has periodontal disease or is on the verge of developing periodontal disease. If you believe you may need to schedule more than two dental appointments per year, our team would be happy to recommend based on your oral health and dental history at your next appointment with us.

If you are a resident of Leesburg, Virginia, or any other surrounding area and are due for your bi-yearly cleaning and exam, don’t hesitate to contact our dental office to schedule an appointment. We can also help you plan ahead of time by scheduling your next cleaning as well.

Why are dental cleanings and exams important?

To have a clean and healthy smile, brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash every day are essential. Having excellent at-home oral health habits will keep your teeth and gums clean, which helps them fight off any decay or disease.

Even though taking care of your teeth at home is essential, it is not enough to ensure that your smile is out of harm’s way. Regular cleanings and exams are still important in maintaining positive oral health and preventing dental issues.

Dental cleanings are performed by dental professionals who expertly scrape away plaque and tartar from areas around the teeth and gums that are almost impossible to reach with a toothbrush. The teeth are then cleaned and polished with special toothpaste and flossed to ensure that they are squeaky clean.

Once your teeth have been rid of plaque and polished by a dental hygienist, the dentist will come and examine your teeth. Regular dental exams allow us to help catch dental decay in the beginning stages to perform the restorative treatment. The dentist will use x-rays to spot even the tiniest amount of decay existing on a tooth.

Will a dental cleaning whiten my teeth?

Dental cleanings help remove stains that have built up since your last appointment, but they will not make your smile noticeably whiter.

If you are interested in professional teeth whitening, Leesburg Family Dental offers one-visit teeth whitening sessions and take-home whitening kits to give you a whiter, brighter smile. Being a family dental practice, we serve patients of all ages, including children. We are dedicated to helping every adult and child patient develop a positive relationship when coming to the dentist.

Understanding that not all patients are fond of receiving dental work, we offer minor sedation methods to help make the visit more comfortable. Your dentist can use nitrous oxide or laughing gas for children and adults who need help relaxing during their treatments.

If you believe yourself or your child would greatly benefit from sedation during your cleaning and exam, please get in touch with us before your appointment to arrange it.
